The people in your neighborhood

Slow-moving traffic provides an opportunity for great people watching. Most people are willing subjects for a foreigner's photos and often smile and wave.

Sadly, slow traffic also means lots of opportunities for begging children to approach the cars. There is a strong consensus among those we know here that it's not wise to give to these children (have you seen Slumdog Millionaire?). It is still very troubling for me to look away from their pleading eyes. These kids were playing drums and turning somersaults.

Driving in Delhi

Though traffic was more organized and drivers seemed to adhere to some kind of patterned, rule-governed driving behavior, the means of transport were intriguing. Among the cars, autorickshaws and trucks were horse-drawn carts, bicycle rickshaws and the impressive 5-on-a-motorcycle.

Just after Christmas we traveled to Delhi and Agra. Delhi is a much more organized and historically interesting city than Bangalore. We saw some very interesting monuments (post to come) and wished we'd had more time there. Our sight seeing was truncated by bad weather, (and a less-than-ideal driver) which doubled the time we'd hoped to spend in transit to Agra. The 6-hour drive each way did provide some good photos, though.

 

 

 

 

More from our drive to Agra

About half of the drive was through villages and fields. There were thatched huts, loads of cow patties set out to dry for fuel, and fields of mustard (grown for mustard oil).

 

 

 

 

Along the road

One thing I find amusing/interesting is the creative (mis)spellings and signs in English. The word "scheduled" falling off the bank sign was all too illustrative of life here. :) And do you use your dippers at night??
