Two other sounds that are an inextricable part of the harmonic fabric of our lives...
+ Our fridge playing Jingle Bells when the door is open too long.
+ Truck horns. These blasts would be VERY illegal in the US. The frequency and decibel level are adequate to deafen small mammals and possibly inflict hearing loss on the rest of us. I will grant them creativity, though. There are many different ear-blasting arrangements of tones out there. They all make me jump.
+ Very subtle series of different clicks (audible only to the practiced ear) announcing the shift from one power source to another (main, back-up, none), signaling the end, beginning or resuming of things such as laundry, microwave power, AC, oven, etc. (To be distinguished from total power cuts which are a bit more obvious. :))

Sounds from our life...
In many ways, I'm sure our life sounds a lot like yours. But lately a few sounds have struck me as unique to our life here...
Riiiiiip, crash. Old palm leaves being removed (by a long stick ending in a hook) from the trees before they fall and cause damage
Strains of Sanskrit spoken and sung from temples in the neighborhood
Chooka-chooka-chooka-chooka-choooooooo! Train-like pressure cooker building and then blasting steam
Early morning chirps... not from birds but from chipmunks! So loud they awaken you.
Thud, flap, thud, flap... walking on marble floors
Raucous meowing of feral cats fighting... usually in the wee hours of the morning
Soft jingle of silver anklets in the afternoon... signals our housekeepers presence
Slowing of rickshaw motors followed by their staccato sputtering as they accelerate on the other side of the speed bump outside our house
Constant whirring of ceiling fans
