Ok. It took me a second to realize those are 2 separate things. Although, neither of them look ripe to me.

The hairy one looks like a seed from a liquid amber tree that grew in my front yard. Also looks like a green sea urchin. What about "Land Urchin"?

The smooth one looks like an apple with squash insides. How about a "Granny Squash"?

Love your guesses! I am still trying to figure out what they're called in English, to be honest. :)

Your description of the latter is right on; it is like an apple w/squash insides. It's prepared like zucchini... sauteed, though its seeds are crunchy like a pumpkin. Tasty!

The bottom one looks just like a tomatillo.

I think the first one is Karela. In English it would be a "bitter gourd".

Good guesses, Shawna. The bottom does look a lot like a tomatillo but it is not. The top does resemble a bitter gourd but it's much smaller and it's bumps are regular (vs. the interesting, irregular skin of bitter gourd). I know the names in Indian languages but haven't found English yet!
